Check Out These Birds

Best Meat Bird starting $3.50

The Jersey Black Giant is an amazing meat bird. Heritage breeds don't reach market weight in six weeks like the industrially produced Cornish Cross Broilers (an excellent bird but not a heritage breed). The hens reach 10 pounds while the roosters will tip the scales at 13 pounds in about 20 weeks. They lay 3-5 large brown eggs a week.

Males $3.50

Unsexed $4.25

Hens $5.00

Best Egg Layer starting $3.50

White Leghorn  is our pick for best heritage breed egg layer. Mature White Leghorns weigh 4-6 pounds and the hens produce 5 or more white eggs a week (260-300 eggs per year). They are great foragers, they don't need lots of attention, so they are great free-range birds.

Males $3.50

Unsexed $4.25

Hens $5.00

Best Dual Purpose starts $3.50

The Rhode Island Red is a classic!  The heritage strains of the Rhode Island Red lays 200–250 brown eggs yearly, and yields rich-flavored meat. They reach a weight of 6.5-8.5 pounds in 20-24 weeks. That is also about the age they start laying eggs. They are a hardy breed that handles heat and cold as well as any chicken. The hens are friendly and the roosters are great flock protectors.

Males $3.50

Unsexed $4.25

Hens $5.00

Barnyard Buffet $3.50

Barnyard Buffet $3.50

We are increasing our production because of the nationwide shortage but our breeding stock is limited. So we are also hatching from one of our flocks that we normally just use for eggs. That flock is a collection of Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Silkies, Australorps, red,/black/golden Sex Links, Jersey Giants, Austra Whites, Ameraucana, Leghorns and others. The roosters are Jersey Giants and Barred Rock. There is no telling what combination you might get. Eggs might be white, brown, or green, you never know. But that's the fun part of raising chickens.

Unsexed $3.50

Narragansett Turkeys

Barnyard Buffet $3.50

Narragansett Turkeys

Now taking orders for Spring 2026

The  Narragansett Turkey is one of the largest of the heritage breeds. Typically they are processed at around 24 weeks when the Toms are at 23 pounds and the hens are at 14 pounds, which is earlier than many other heritage breeds. Mature Toms can reach 33 pounds and the hens will reach 18 pounds. They have a calm temperament and their coloring is black, gray, tan, giving them an appearance similar to that of the Bronze but a little lighter in color than wild turkeys.

We never intended to ship chicks

Our entire hatchery is based on the idea of locally hatched chicks from local flocks that are small flocks raised on as much pastureland as we can arrange. We can hatch 700 birds a week and that is enough to supply our area. But given the national shortage, we have decided to open it up and ship large orders. You can order 100 birds. You can't order less than 100 and you can't order more than 100. You might need to get together with neighbors to put together an order. We will likely have to ship from two different hatchings usually about a week apart. Those numbers are based on shipping boxes and feasibility. For shipping we only charge what we pay for the box and shipping. There is no mark up. We ask for a 25% non-refundable deposit when you order and the balance is due before shipping.

That's It, Three Chicken Breeds and a Turkey

Our goal is not to be the biggest hatchery in the US, it is to be your local hatchery in the central Virginia area. We have picked the birds we think you will have the most success with and offered them at very reasonable prices, for local pick-up, from locally grown flocks.

Local Hatchery is set up to hatch about 700 chicks per week. We would love to presell those chicks, so if you let us know ahead of time (about a month) what chicks you will be needing we will try to make sure we have them for you. If you are interested in turkeys the more notice we get, the more likely we will be able to fulfill your needs. Right now we are taking orders for turkey poults for the Spring of 2026.

In Virginia, the minimum number of day-old chicks you can sell is six, as outlined in § 3.2-6510 of Virginia law.  Not true for turkey poults.

We only offer heritage breed chicks. My apologies to the Cornish Crosses and the Freedom Rangers, both are very fine breeds, but they are not heritage breeds.
